Gout has long then linked with drinking too much alcohol and eating too many meats and certain seafoods. In fact, only rich people who could afford these foods used to get gout. Today, the disease is still linked with what you eat, and if you focus on the right foods and avoid the wrong foods, you may be able to keep your gout under control.

It’s all about managing your uric acid levels. Uric acid is created in your body when purine is broken down. Everyone has purine in their bodies, and too much of it causes too much uric acid. The foods that have high purines tend to be the ones to avoid.

A Brief Description of Gout

Gout is a disease associated with the joints. Typical symptoms of gout include exceptional pain in the joints, redness and swelling of the joints and a lingering discomfort in the joints even after intense pain has gone away. The symptoms of gout usually come on very quickly and often happen at night.

Foods to Avoid if You Have Gout

There are certain foods that can cause and exacerbate the symptoms of gout. These are the foods that have high purines. For example, you should avoid organ meats, such as kidney and liver and processed meats, such as deli cuts, sausage and hot dogs.

Seafood is another group of foods that you should avoid. Herring, mussels, anchovies, haddock, tuna, sardines and mackerel are the worst offenders. Alcohol should also be avoided as it contributes to dehydration. Beer is especially bad and so are certain liquors. Finally, the relationship between wine and gout is not fully understood, but always talk with your doctor before consuming any alcohol if you have gout.

You won’t have to change your lifestyle drastically if you have gout. In fact, eating a diet based around the disease will be helpful for your whole body, and it is a diet that is encouraged for most people whether they have gout or not. The goals of your diet should focus on the following points:

  1. Hydration – Make sure that you are drinking at least 64 ounces of water or non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids each day.
  2. Saturated Fats – Everyone should avoid saturated fats from high fat dairy products, some poultry cuts and certain red meats.
  3. Complex Carbs – Complex carbs are good for you, and even vegetables and some fruits with high purine levels are okay if you have gout.
