Understanding And Relieving Psoriasis

Types of Psoriasis and Their Treatment Options

Sufferers have tried both prescription medications and home remedies to free themselves of it for years. And their suffering wasn’t unnoticed. “The heartbreak of psoriasis” was the tagline of a frequently aired television commercial from the 1970s. For non-sufferers, the line quickly became a joke. For those afflicted with this disease however, there’s nothing remotely funny about it. In addition to developing unsightly and painful skin conditions, psoriasis:

  • can cause diabetes
  • can cause inflammatory bowel disease
  • can cause heart disease
Types Of Psoriasis

The cause of this disease is not fully understood, but immune system malfunctions, genetics, and specific bacterial infections may all be causes. Sufferers of this disease know that there is more than one type of it. Each variation has its own unique symptoms and problems. For example, inverse psoriasis:

  • has smooth red patches that “glisten”
  • outbreaks generally occur between folds of skin
  • patches are usually found around groin or under armpits, ears, or breasts

Guttate psoriasis:

  • seems to be caused by a bacteria assosciated with strep throat
  • victims are usually under the age of thirty
  • outbreaks may or may not recur
  • one of the less common forms of psoriasis
  • symptoms include small red “drop” shaped marks that appear on arms, legs, and body trunk

Pustular psoriasis:

  • four different types of this type of psoriasis
  • appears as raised white and yellow pus filled blisters on palms of hands and soles of feet
  • pustular psoriasis can destroy toe and finger nails, cause inflammation of joints, and in some cases be life threatening

Erythrodermic psoriasis:

  • very serious and inflammatory type of psoriasis
  • symptoms include red, hot, itchy, scaling skin
  • rare form of psoriasis that generally affects the elderly
Medical Treatments

Very serious forms of this disease like pustular and erythrodermic psoriasis require hospital stays to address the medical complications they can cause. Outbreaks of psoriasis can be chronic, recurring, or onetime events, depending on the type and the patient’s overall health. Prescribed treatment is generally topical corticosteroids. While no home remedies for this disease have been approved or sanctioned by physicians or medical associations, among the DIY treatments sufferers say bring relief are:

  • soaking affected areas in vinegar
  • covering affected areas in plastic wrap
  • massaging affected areas with warm olive oil
